Topic: MOT's journey to increase her muscle mass

Good morning!

I had a bit of a rough day yesterday. I woke up slightly congested, nothing too bad, I'm not sick, but the congestion was annoying so w/o looking at the side effects on the box I took some benadryl. It was the only decongestion meds we had. Well I took it at about 7:15 am and by 8:15 am I was wiped. I was suppose to hit the gym around 9:30 after the kids were up and ready, but I just was exhausted and had to sleep the meds off . The kids played all morning while I slept. By 10:30 I started coming through a bit and got Em ready for school. After she left for school at 11:30 then Ash and I hit the gym, but it wasn't great, I felt groggy all day. Stupid move on my part, but oh well.

Last night wasn't a great sleep, I seem to be on the every other day sleep thing. I woke up at 2 am and Phil wasn't home yet (he had a dinner at Carmine's in the city) so I was concerned and was kind of half sleeping. He got home at 2:30 and I couldn't really fall back asleep. He will basically be worthless today and probably be sleeping all morning . I did get up and hit my second cardio this morning. My weight has come down a pound from the cheesecake factory so this is good.

Plan today is do some things around here this morning. I have laundry, thank you notes, cleaning, make a few doctor appts for the kids, food prep, etc. Kids have school this afternoon, I will run to sams and then we have a 4pm playdate through dinner.

Tori-I really think the key to the off season is just moderation.  I know if I am going to have a few cheats then I am going to need to scale things back a few days.  I use the scale as my guide as I know what avg weight I need to be at every Monday.  I know many people are scared of the scale and don't want to face it, but for me its just a tool to keep me in check with where I need to be.  I don't ever beat myself up for a cheat, no point, its done and most of my cheats are planned anyway.  Like I know I want to go off plan Sunday so I am setting myself up to do that now.  Same with T-day, I will keep things very spot on the few days before hand so I can enjoy that day guilt free and then right back on plan the next day.

Annette-I only used my suit one season this past season so I want to get more use out of it, so I am going to bling it up more.  Its very expensive to get a new suit every year and I really like the one I have so I am just going to add more to it.

I hear you on owning it Tori, it was quite painful to have to look up the macros for a piece of cheesecake at the cheesecake factory last night Laughing.  There was enough fat in that one slice for a couple days of macros, not good.

Jane, I think those comments are funny too.  I swear, my mother to this day thinks I don't like food at all.  Especially yummy stuff like cakes, candy, etc.  What these people don't get is of course we like them, who doesn't?, but we all make choices and we choose health and fitness over 30 secs of yummy taste and extra fat on our ass Laughing

Topic: MOT's journey to increase her muscle mass

Good morning!

It was a pretty busy day yesterday. It was my real kids birthday. I still can't believe I have 5 year olds now, this past year just flew. I had to be at both their schools today and their schools are 30 mins apart so I was running like crazy. Then last night we took them out to dinner at the cheesecake factory and we shared a piece of cookie dough cheesecake. Truth be told, I think Phil and I ate most of it . I was really trying to be good this week too.  Scale is not happy with me the past 2 days and especially today after that cheat.  I am a pound over where I should be come Monday and 1/2 pound over where I need to be for my weekly average.  The plan is to scale things back the next 3 days to get this down a bit.  I am hoping by Sunday my average weight will be down where it needs to be because we are going over a friend's house to hang, watch football, etc and I don't want to have to pack meals.  So I am going to see how much damage control I can do the next 3 days.

On other notes, I e-mailed with Maggie from Maggiefit (she made my suit last year) a bit yesterday. We were discussing me sending my suit back to her to get the straps fixed. They were too long last season and I ended up having to tie them. So she is going to fix them and then upgrade my suit with more bling . She is slow in December so I am going to send it in then.

My thoughts on the pill are I will never take it again.  It screwed my body up and I never got a cycle back on my own because of it til after I had my kids.  To this day I won't use any hormone altering methods for BC.  I use a hormone free IUD and this is fine.

Nice job making it through the weekend.  I had some hard times yesterday too.  My meals were off because of my kids birthday and then I had cake at the party, which I planned, but then we came back here and everyone ordered pizza.  I was tempted to go for that too, but I said no, I already had the planned cheat for the day and I thought the pizza was going overboard a bit cause the cake slice was big Laughing.  I really need to keep in check this is bad time of year, especially I know this week there will be another birthday dinner and pizza next weekend.

Topic: Annette's "Transition" for Spring 2009

Annette, I think that is my favorite part of this whole, building/cutting cycle is getting to know your body.  Having done this build with Joe, I know calorie/macro wise what my thresholds are for gaining and losing weight.  I know how my body reacts to different foods at different times of day and what I can and can't get away with.  I think you have to get more out of this whole process then 5 mins on stage and a trophy, its just not worth it if your not learning about yourself at the same time.  You have to enjoy/value the entire experience.  I am probably in the minority, but when I started competing I never did this for the actual competition (I know, nuts), I really did it for the actual journey.  I knew I don't really have the build to be super competitive in this sport, but I really enjoy the entire process and this is why I do it.  So I say just enjoy every stage of this, even when its time to gain a little, it will pay off, as I keep telling myself Laughing

Topic: MOT's journey to increase her muscle mass

Good morning!

I was absolutely exhausted last night after the party. I ended up going sleep right after my kids at 8:45, very long day. We started off with a leg workout yesterday morning, I'd say I'd give it a 7. I just wasn't too focused on it with the kids party and everything. Came home, had lunch and we left for the party and when we got to the mall the party was located in, both sets of grandparents were there already, along with a few others. We went to the place and the other party before us was runnng late. We had to wait around 20 mins before we could even get into the party room and these little kids were all getting a bit nuts. Then when we were in the party room, it was disorganized. The ladies were running back and forth trying to get each kid paint colors, the room was pretty small, very hard to move around in to help the kids. Then when it was time for the cake, they cut the pieces so big we almost didn't have enough and I ordered 1/2 sheet which should have been enough for over 40 people. Then I have my mother bitching that she hadn't gotten cake yet, I swear the woman is like a 2 year old
Yell. However, the kids did have fun and they gave all the kids a free t-shirt for the delayed start. Now the kids have more barbies and barbie parts then they know what to do with . After the party my inlaws and sister n law came back to the house, opened the gifts with the kids and they ordered pizza, since I had cake I passed on the pizza.

Any of you moms of girls have any suggestions on how to store/organize all the barbie stuff?

Annette-The pill is actually what screwed my period up.  After I stopped it I never got it back and had to resort to fertility drugs to get preg.  After I had my kids is when I started getting it back on my own.  I guess that shook my system up a bit.  So from the time I stopped the pill, it was about 3 years later, but I had the pregnancy within those 3 years.

Miki-No time for a nap unfortunately, but I went to bed early last night, I am up early, but I did get over 8 hrs sleep.

Liz-Thanks for the tip Smile

Annette, here's an idea, why don't you e-mail Joe, tell him the next show you plan on competing in and ask him where he wants you to cap your weight off as far as gain.  Then you have a number you know you need to stay within and you don't have to feel guilty about a pound here and there.  It might give you also some structure that you like having when dieting.

Topic: MOT's journey to increase her muscle mass

Good morning!

Horrible night sleep last night.  I woke up at 4 am and I couldn't go back to sleep.  I just kept thinking of everything I need to do before the kids party and I just couldn't get my mind to settle down.

Yesterday, even though I was cramping and felt like crap, I was super strong for some reason and got a PR on the incline DB press.  I did 5 reps with 42.5 db's, this was after I realized the 40's were too light when I cranked out 9.  I guess you never know when your strong days are because the way I felt yesterday I was thinking I may have to drop my weights.

The husband and I were fighting a lot yesterday, I may have been extra bitchy with the period, but he was just doing nothing to help get ready for the full house we will have today.  I didn't expect him to clean, but he was making more messes as I was cleaning up and I was getting pissed off, I don't have time to double clean anything.  Anyway, I still need to do a little vacuuming, but that's about it.  We are going to squeeze in a leg workout this morning, then the party is at 2 and the family will then come back to our house after and watch the kids open presents.

Miki-cramps seem better today, I'm glad it didn't effect my workout.

MC-I never get periods when my bodyfat gets low, so it becomes a non-issue thankfully

Char-I am thinking the weight will come down this week.  Actually its OK even if I maintain it because I should be 127.5 by next Monday.

Jane-My last show was June 28th and I didn't get my period back til mid Sept so it did take almost 3 months to get it back, should come back soon.

Annette-I had periods of time when I never got it.  Before I had my kids I never got them unless I was on the pill.

That's the first time I've ever heard of a husband preferring one competition lean.  Most husband's I know, including my own, do not like their woman that lean.  My husband hates when he can feel my bones, he feels like he is going to crush me or break me Laughing.  He much rather me have a little meat on my bones.

Hey Annette, sorry about the headaches.  Hope you feel better.  I have to sit here and laugh when I read you think you gained weight going over on protein for a few days Laughing.  You really honestly think you are going to pack on the pounds eating a little more protein?  Not gonna happen, I know you don't really trust your body right now because you've never done this little cardio, but trust me you will not gain from going over some protein macros.

A cruise sounds like fun, but all that food, that is definietly hard.  One of my friends who just started working with Joe this past summer, gained 10 pounds on a cruise she just came back from.  However, she made it no secret she was going to indulge.  I think like you said, eat healthy, stay away from the midnight buffets and keep active you'll be fine Wink

Topic: MOT's journey to increase her muscle mass

Good morning!

Well, I woke up with the worst menstrual cramps and flow, I won't give TMI on that Laughing.  My weight is up this morning, I think from a combination of the period and the dinner we had last night.  We went out to Chili's and I got a steak, I told them not to season it, but it tasted super salty so I think that may be part of the reason.  I only had it with broccoli and my macros were spot on since I budgeted for a 5 oz piece of sirloin.  I think it must be the menstrual plus the salt.  Anyway, my weight will end up being 1/2 pound over where I should be, but I think this is PMS related and will end up evening out next week.  I should be 127.5 next week and this is what I am averaging this week.  I will just maintain this for next week.

Today's plan is gym for chest/shoulders and then the rest of the day is cleaning the house, getting things set for my kids birthday party.  The party is tomorrow at a ceramics studio, but then the family will be coming back to the house after to hang for the rest of the day.  Definitely need to do some cleaning and decluttering.

Annette & Miki-Thanks, still a bit congested, but its not any worse and my kids haven't gotten it.

Shellie-Thanks, yes I was surprised to be able to increase on a exercise I haven't done in 2 months.

Pam-Actually that's not true, you really can get stronger and not grow more muscle, I am proof of that.  I had many years where I was getting stronger, but no muscle growth, having muscle growth has a lot to do with your diet and without the extra calories to support that you won't grow anything even if your strength increases.  Even when you do have the food, no guarantee for us ectomorphs Frown

Annette, do you where a lifting belt when you squat?  I recently started to do this because the heavy squats would bother my back, and it makes a world of difference, I would invest in one of you haven't already.

I don't think 15 pounds is that bad considering your last show was July, right?  Although I may be in the minority with that opinion.  Especially, some of that may be muscle.  I am about 11-12 pounds over contest weight and I have been building since July so that is where I should be with 1/2 lb gain a week.  Use that extra food and really hit it hard in the gym and take advantage of it.  Are you planning on any shows in 2009?

Pam, I agree with you on the pictures.  You actually do look pretty thin, I think you definitely could benefit from doing a build to bring up your back and shoulders, have you thought about doing that.  Posing IMO is always a work in progress, I think it was pretty good.  Maybe just relaxing your hands/wrists a bit and keeping your arms closer to your body in that front pose.  I was told your finger tips should be able to just reach touch the side thigh.  I think you look pretty good up there woman Laughing

Good afternoon!

Been trying to get in here, but everytime I try the phone rings, doorbell rings or somebody needs help wiping , sorry TMI.

Anyway, having a pretty good day. Hubby fell asleep last night down stairs on the couch so I got a solid 8 hrs of sleep, no snoring interruptions. My cold is not any worse, I have some chest congestion, little runny nose, but nothing is worse, so this is good. I feel fine otherwise. Hit the gym for back, my back has been feeling good lately, as you may remember it was bothering me a lot back in Sept. Well, I have not DL'd since, but today I thought I would try and take it light and slow. Well, I ended up upping my last set which is a 2 rep set by 10 pounds . I was surprised how good I felt considering I haven't done Rack DLs in 2 months, so I am excited I can DL again.

We came home after the gym and Em went to school, Ash and I ran to sams and walmart and we met friends for lunch. Came home got Em off the bus at 3 and were just chilling on this yucky rainy cold day.

My weight came back down today, I guess I may just be having some weird PMS stuff going on.

Wow, that is a monster set!

I only do heavy DB's with my husband there spotting me.  This is why I save chest/shoulders and leg workouts for the weekends.  I don't trust myself going heavy on certain exercises without a spot.  Looks like a good workout regardless.

Nice on the 40# DB's Laughing.  I am up to the 40's too on the incline and believe it or not my long lanky arms can actually press 50 lb db's for 2 reps on the flat.  This is what pisses me off because I know woman with half my strength and they have more upper body muscle then me, no fair Cry
