Topic: Journey Back to the TX Shredder 09

Well woke up this morning to do my cardio (not fasted) and I have a few comments to make about the gym.  Maybe it's just my gym, or maybe it's an epidemic.

First I use a different gym to do my cardio because the machines are nicer and they have plasmas to watch. My lifting gym is much more 'dungeon' and seemingly geared more towards bodybuilders and hardcore.  This gym I do my cardio at is soccer mom/fitness/club gold's.  The cool thing about it is the cardio is elevated a story above the weight room so while i'm walkin on the treadmill I can view what is going on down in the entire weight room without anyon even knowing I am watching them.

The first thing I noticed were the trainers.  I know some of them and a few know their stuff, but it really seems like a revolving door with the trainers...in one day and out the next.  This one lady, obviously overweight, (and I applaud her for joining a gym in an effort to lose weight) hired a trainer she figures is gonna help her get in shape. However as I watched them train he was showing her wrong form on exercises, and then would actually talk/laugh with her DURING her sets.  I could not imagine talking...let alone joking...in the middle of my sets of anything.  She was not using very intense weight, but still don't you think you should be focused.  This lady is spending her hard earned money on a gym and trainer in order to get in shape, but is she really getting anything out of it?  Funny thing happened as I was leaving.  She pulled out in front of me and we were exiting the parking lot at the same time and right before the exit she turns into Sonic to get a post workout meal....I seriously laughed to myself in my car.  Whatever little calories she just burned at being consumed back immedietly and more so.

Well I guess that's my semi-rant for the day...I just hate to see people waste their time and money and get frustrated when they don't have any results.

I'll be back later for shoulders and calfs.

I really love hammerstrenght machines.  Especially the chest and back ones.  I feel like they can give you a great workout when your not using free weights.

Did my high intensity cardio today.  I'm starting out slow so I dont kill myself.

I have a park next to myself with huge hills so I went to the steepest one and did sprints up it.  I jogged for 5 minutes and stretched to warm up.  Then I started at the bottom and sprinted until I couldn't and then finished the rest by walking...walked back down while catching my breath for about 3 or 4 minutes...i'm really outta shape here...I know this isn't techincally HITT, but sprinting up that hill killed me, even though I only did it three times.  Also it was weird my legs started to get pumped at the end. haha.

Today is one of my carb up days to 300 woohooo.  Did back tonight

DB Rows

I did about 5 working sets making my way up to 130's for 6...nothing crazy still protecting my back

Lat pull downs

4 sets with a drop here...focused mainly on squeezing and feeling the back and getting a good stretch at the top.

Superset: Machine lowerback rows w/ Machine pull overs

4 sets here again with the squeezing

standing barbell curls

only did 2 sets to failure with the 45lb bar but got a great pump outta it.

Food is on track today and felt good in the gym. weighed at 224.8 this morning and am 15 1/2 weeks out from the Shredder. will get pics asap

Tonight did Chest and a little triceps.  Of course the gym was packed being the begining of January but I still got most of the machines I wanted.

Incline Hammer Strength

2 warm ups

4 working sets, 1 drop with the heaviest set being 360 (4 plates on each side) for 6 and dropped down to 180 for 12

Decline Smith Press

4 working sets focused more on feeling the squeeze of pecs more than anything

Incline DB Flys

4 sets of 12-15 with again squeezing the crap outta the chest at the top.  Only went up to about 50's here for last set.

Cable Cross Overs (altho I dont actually cross over)

This exercise alwasy gives me a great final pump with 3 sets and a quick drop on the 3rd.

Tricep Pushdowns

I only did one set here but it was a triple drop...90-70-50 with reps being 15-12-10 after a 20 rep warmup with 80

Felt good today.  Was happy with the heavy first set and the great pump I had as well.

Topic: Muscle Gain?

I had a question on this subject.  If you gain all the muscle your going to within the first 6 months of training how does this apply to what age you begin training.  I started training at 16 or 17 seriously...but I feel like I'm still in PRIME growing years...and dont think that I could've gained all the muscle I'm going to in life my junior year in high school.  What are your thoughts?

Well even though I've been a sometime poster on these boards it hasn't been until recently that I hired Dr. Joe for my next show.  I wanted to wait till I finished school before I did another one and now that I am done I have decided on the same show (different organization) that I did for my first competition.

It will be NPC Texas Shredder in Austin on April 25th ( I think there is something else going on that date too), promoted by Dave Goodin.  I've had the chance to talk with him and some other judges after my first two shows and they said I needed to come in harder or more grainer as one judge put it.  I think with Dr. Joe I'm on the right schedule.  He's been super super helpful and supportive to answer all my questions that I have sometimes on a daily basis.  I began my 'official' contest diet on January 1st but I cleaned up my act about a month before with some cheating going on through the Holidays.

I figured why not ressurect this thread as now I am an official part of Team K and share my progress and get any valuable insight anyone may want to share.  My lower back still suffers occasionally so I'm nervous about deads and squats (even tho I did some squats last night), but I dont think that will hinder me too much.

Anyways, today woke up did my 30 minute of cardio and had the day off from work so just been eating and relaxin some.  Going back tonite to do back and biceps. Macros are on for the day and when all is said and done I will be at around 255p/205c/40f.

Just for comparison here are shots from my first two shows about a year apart, and then this year hopefully much better.

haha my name is Dave.  That is a fitting description of Rob Zombie..at least everything before his last album which i thought sucked royally.  I absolutly hate when bands have a great thing going and then change their sound completely because they want to 'grow' and end up sounding like utter crap.  Case in point: Linkin Park, Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000 *altho their latest single sounds more like the good stuff they got popular with, the list could go on.

My favorite part on This is Absolution is when they slow it down and he sings and each time there is a more prominent screaming behind the singing.  Also, on that song 'When darkness falls'...awesome vocals during the singing.

Eye of the storm rock too!

BTW here is my bodyspace for more info if you are interested and up to date pics:

Topic: NPC Natural Shows

After looking thru pics from the Shredder and Lackland, I didn't see any real mass monsters.  They both looked like normal drug tested shows.  I feel like I can compete in these.  I didn't find any Texas State Natural pics tho, must be a new show.

Topic: NPC Natural Shows

I'm looking at doing some NPC natural shows in 2009.  Most notebly the NPC Shredder in Austin put on by Dave Goodin, The Texas State Natural Championships, and the Lackland Classic in San Antonio.  These are Team Universe qualifiers.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has any experience in the NPC natural shows.  How much do they differ from actual natural organizations shows compared to NPC non tested shows.  Are they as rigorous in the drug screening, do they look more for ripped competitors or mass?  Just trying to get a little information on how these go in terms of the natural orgs.

I don't know if I would consider Zombie death metal.  He's definetly heavy metal, but isn't death metal usually alot alot ALOT of screaming with double bass kick drums and all out thrashing? (not my fav).  Zombie is hard, but he has a distinct sound that isn't a whole lot of crazy screaming...some but not the entire way through.  Look up the band "As I Lay Dying" - songs: Through Struggle, 94 hours, and Forever.  That's what I would consider death metal.

Side note I just installed 4 speakers, iPod deck, 2 amps, and a 10" sub in my car...and hooolllyyy crap...this music sounds absolutly amazing on it...ESPECIALLY Killswitch Engage...their song 'This is Absolution''s intro is ridiculous...I have to readjust my rearview mirror constantly from the abuse it takes.

Back to the heavy metal point...even though Killswitch is amazing for heavy lifts adn what not, I think that there is no comparison with the all time great, Pantera.  They dont have the singing that Killswitch does except for a few slower songs, but they are so ridiculously heavy...it's insane.  Mouth for War will get me up for anything, 5 minutes alone...same thing.  My all time song above any other that is THE best bar none is "Dig" by Mudvayne....amazing.

Hey Mary, I totally agree with how Killswitch changes their tempo and what not...so awesome.  Some of my favorites by them are The End of Heartache, Holy Diver (Cover), My Curse, and This is Absolution...the last one is just amazing to me.  I consider myself still young at 22 and I love classic rock...from GNR to Ozzy to Def Leppard, etc etc.

I really want to see the Pink Floyd Lazer light show...even though it's not really live it still seems pretty sweet.  Killswitch engage is also at the top of my list to see live...so heavy.  Dropkick Murphys is comin to a little bar in San Antonio, I may see them even though I only know a few songs.  Great drinkin' music if I weren't dieting :(.  My next guaranteed show is Powerman 5000 at the same bar...gonna be suhweet!

Topic: Leg Press Stance

So I always thought I knew about this, but I've been second guessing myself lately.  What is the best stance on leg press for hitting outter quads more toward the hips?  I feel like my tear drops over power my upper and outter quads...also does width or feet postition on leg extensions effect this?

Topic: lower back which doctor?

Well just to keep whoever was watchin updated, I went in for my 3 week check up after my initial visit.  He said I recovered extremly fast, and that he was originally worried it was a disc, but it was closer to just strained.  Got the go ahead to start light lower back exercises and every 3-6 weeks move up in moderation until I'm 100%.  Now it's the mental part of getting past being scared of lower back exercises.  Funny thing was I have laid off squats for about a month now and he said my legs had actually gotten stronger.  Interesting.

Wow Dave that is an impressive lineup and Layne...Shinedown 8 times wow.  I really want to see Chevelle and Godsmack live.  Coheed would be sweet too.  Breaking Benjamin is awesome live...they are the band that really got me interested in seeing live shows.  I didn't know all their material but came to love it after seeing them live.  As far as must have...mmmm all three albums have their moments but I would say We Are Not Alone is their best overall but Phobia has their best song IMO...Diary of Jane.

Haha Sean I will have to almost agree with you.  The live show they put on is sooo sick.  Theory of a Deadman was really great last night.  The crowd was lame, but the band kicked ass.  Here is my List of bands seen

  • Weird Al
  • Snoop Dogg
  • Linkin Park
  • Korn
  • Theory of a Deadman (2x)
  • Breaking Benjamin (3x)
  • Disturbed (2x) - best band ever live and studio
  • Trapt
  • Blindside
  • Shinedown
  • Powerman 5000
  • Stone Temple Pilots
  • Slipknot - one of the best live shows ever
  • DragonForce

Topic: lower back which doctor?

I went and saw the Sports Back Specialist today and they took x rays and he checked me out.  He said they were still in the gray area between a strian and a possible bulging disc.  I gotta take it easy on lowerback exercises and movements that heavily use this (squats, deads, military press, etc).  He told me I could go full blast with other exercises that do not use it.  This is good news, I go back to see him in 3 weeks hopefully it will be much better by then.

I am a HUGE HUGE fan of live music, and I love to be in the pit where the action is.  My favorite music is Metal and Alternative Rock with bands like Disturbed, Bullet for my Valentine, Breaking Benjamin, etc.  When you are in hte pit it's pretty intense and almost like a workout just trying to keep your balance and stay alive.  Anyone else love this experience and what kinda cardio effects do you think this is?  I'm going to go see Theory of a Deadman tomorrow night and lookin very much forward to it.

Topic: lower back which doctor?

So I tried working out back tonite because it was the first day in a while i didnt have any pain in my lowe back and the second I got up to a decent weight on rows it seized up again.  I guess it was never really healed.  On the way home my left leg started going numb and again in bed.  Reading on the net they say these are symptoms of a herniated disc....which sucks big time.  I'm setting up an appointmen with a doctor for hopefully next week.  Any help on what I can do till then if this is the proper diagnosis.  Freakin sucks...

OK.  Follow up Qs: since I take about 30-50g carbs post workout should I split this up half and half iwth the shake and half with the meal or just put all those 'post workout carbs' into the shake and then have a normal meal later?  Also, is this cool while trying to lose not pack on muscle.

Back to timing...Most people have some sort of whey protein drink right after working out right?  Well if you have say like 35 grams here and then go home and have a meal with 30g protein and 30g carbs for your post workout solid meal...is this too close to the shake?  We spend all day eating 2-3 hours in between meals but why does post workout let us take in this protien so close to each other?...or am I wrong in taking in that post workout meal so close to the shake?
