Topic: Dead Lift - The King of Back Development

I have been able to dead pretty heavy numbers and the only time I hurt myself was on a warm up set of 185.  Go figure.

Topic: Close Grip Bench

I appreciate all of the info.  I guess I will give them a shot and see how it feels.  It is always nice to have a great group of folks who share the same injuries as you Laughing

Sean,

I agree.  Bodybuilders were left out when it came to the design of the shoulder.

Topic: Close Grip Bench

I love using close grip bench (elbows tucked in) for a tricep movement on the core week, but how does it fair on the shoulders?  I have finanly nursed a shoulder injury back to health and I am staying away from flat bb bench (the cause) and I would not want to put extra stress on it.  What do you guys think?

Layne,

How do carbs come into play?  Do you feel it is as important to have fast acting liquid carbs or will whole food do the trick as lng as you get in your protein?

Topic: Home Gym Equipment

Wayne, Sean, and others

I know you guys work or used to work in workout equipment sales.  A buddy of mine is selling the Tuff Stuff RSM-625WS Smith Half Cage Ensemble for around $800.  I was looking to put together a small garage gym for the days I have to work late and can not make it to the gym.  What do you guys think?

Topic: Crossfit

I have noticed a trend and many people are training in crossfit.  I really do not feel it would be the best method if your plan was to hit the stage, but it really seems like a good alternative for the general population who just wants to stay in shape.  What do you guys think?

Topic: Early AM workout nutrition

I am actually a meso/endo.  I am at the start of my diet.  I can bulk on your dieting macros.

My macros are 185/215/45 with about 15 grams of BCAA per day.  I am currently 5' 9" 225lbs at 14 - 15% (i still have my top row of abs (well kinda)

I have not competed in many years, but I just finished a very long powerlifting phase and I feel I am getting a bit sloppy.  I plan on getting back into the 6% range. 15% is just out of line.  I think anything above 10 - 12% is out of line.

Unfortunately, my schedule is set in stone.

Gatorade and BCAA just may do the trick.

Topic: Early AM workout nutrition

Good advice Lucas and I realize the timing is the issue, but I can not change that.  I have to get up so early for work.

I was thinking my body would quickly clear the dextrose/BCAA and allow me to workout without adjusting my schedule.  I am just not sure if the extra dextrose would hurt the fat loss process.

What do you think?

Menna,

That situation would be ideal, but I would puke if I had to eat something liek like just before I worked out.  I can not even stomach 1 scoop of whey just before I lift.

I wake up at 445am and am at the gym by 5am.  What type of nutrition would you use preworkout while precontest.  I was using 1 scoop of whey but my stomach can not longer handle that.  I was thinking of have 6 grams of BCAA with 20 grams of dextrose.  I would mimic the same thing post workout followed by 2 scoops of whey and 50 grams of a complex carb when I get home.  I am alloted 185 grams of carbs a day with my current macros.  What do you guys think?

Topic: Scivation's new book

Graig,

My mistake.  I assumed your were talking about the new cut diet version 4.

Doc,

In a nutshell, the diet is low carb with a starchy carb up every three days.  It is not a no carb diet but all of your carbs come from greens, grapefruit, and blueberries.  This diet is not meant to be a keto diet. It is more based off of insulin control.  This diet reminds me of the beverly diets.  Graig and I were actually talking about different diets.  The book is an easy read.  Take a look at if you get a chance.

You guys are harsh.  I feel the scivation cut diet is a very sound diet.  You carb up every three days and eat grapefruit, blueberries, and greens daily.  This method can be very effective.  Some people just can not endure starches on a daily basis.

Topic: Favorite Powerlifting Routine

Well I am going to finish off with my powerlifting stint and get back into the bodybuilding game.  Westside training has been a great ride and I will use it again in the future.

My rotator has been buging me so I am going to give up bb bench for a while and use strictly dumbbells (yes, I should have listened to you Dr. Joe!!!)

Topic: The Belt... how tight is too tight?

I feel a belt is a must if you are squating/deadlifting for any set of 3 reps or less.  I have made the mistake of not using a belt in the past and have learned the hard way.

I do not feel a belt should be used for anything over 3 or 4 reps.

What do you guys think of taking free form Leucine pre/post workout nutrition?  (Meaning 10g BCAA with an extra 5g of added Leucine)

Would Leucine work as a stand alone or would it cause imbalances?

Topic: BCAA

What do you guys think is the optimal way to use BCAA.  I was taking 10 grams pre workout, 10 grams during, and 10 grams post workout.  I would also take 5 grams pre and five grams post cardio on the days I did not lift.  I did not use any on total off days.  I read somewhere on this site that your body can only handle 6 grams at a time.  What do you think is the optimal way to use them in the offseason and precontest?

Topic: CALI Info Needed

I have been in SoCal for the past couple of years.  The fitness industry is booming in this area and I would not count it out.  Other then that I can not tell you much about the Northern part of the state other then you will have to go further West then Sacramento if you want to be closer to the beaches.  Yosemite Nation Park is about three hours away from Sacramento and is one of the most beautiful places this country has to offer.
