Topic: ****Fantasy Camp '09**** I need to dig deeper - but all I know is nitric oxide is the most powerful/harmful free radical in the body and the body just happens to use this byproduct of respiration to help control blood flow. To take it around the clock is like saying rat poison will give me a great pump, so I'm going to use it all day long. I like the caffeine and sugar in the drinks - that's where you're getting 90-99% of your benefit (as well as the water it's in - if you just hydrate well, you'll lift more, be fuller, stronger, etc.)

Topic: What did you like about being lean? All great points, Tyler. I'd add a couple involving athleticism. I'm a recreational and self-competitive runner, and being light, lean, and fast feels better than fat, slow, and painful. I'll take being lean, hard, and athletic over big and bulky any day.
The face thing is funny - it's actually a modeling consideration for you for sure, and for the first time ever in my life, with my book release and being on TV interviews, etc, it was a consideration for me. |

Topic: Facebook I have requested no friends and haven't posted to anyone's wall. I saw that some emailed me on the facebook and some even started chat lines. I've not even read through my own home page. So, first, sorry to all that think I'm being anti-social....I may get the hang of it, but this is the wrong month to do it, second, I'm flattered, Layne, that you were the first in the webworld to see I had posted a facebook and ran to it to be my friend. I envision you with 34 computers all with browsers open to every bodybuilding and social network forum on the planet with alarm bells that go off with key words at which time you scramble to post a 13-page explanation of leucine. One day books will be written about you and grass-roots self-promotion - you're amazing at it - and it will pay off bigtime!

The question asked and answered was for how much your blood stream could handle (carbs) to not be creating insulin spikes high enough to create storage and regarding protein, how much your body can effectively use in one meal. After I answered with the quote you laid down, I continued that those with faster met rates need more in a directly relative sense. Keep studying the film, Junior - be like Peyton.

Topic: Muscle Gain? You guys are all missing the biggest point. You stop gaining overall muscle mass, but you refine your look. Muscle develops, gets fuller/rounder/denser, and you look much bigger. Let me use Dave and myself as examples again. I've been training for 27 years and he's been training for around 30. My first contest weight 150 lbs, 20 years later 150 lbs. I competed as high as 172, won my pro card at 164 lbs, and competed at many weights in between. But, different body fat levels. Dave has competed between 158 and 170 and at different levels of conditioning as well. Luckily for him as a pure mesomorph, his differing looks are fuller and slightly less sharp versus smaller but peeled. I look just in shape or fatter and bigger as an endo. BUT, look at my point...both of us have almost 30 years of training. If we gained a lb or 3 lbs or 5 lbs a year (of muscle) like all the bonehead writers in mags say you can, we'd both be 200+lb heavy weights right now. Everyone say with me now, " G E N E T I C S " one more time....all together now... " G E N E T I C S " Both Dave and I and every other person who continues to train make physique changes - refining training, time of training, the points I made above (developing the muscle more fully), but it just doesn't add lbs and lbs and lbs of muscle after 6-12 months of hard training.

Topic: ****Fantasy Camp '09**** Dave Goodin said, and I agreed, that every time we've taken a week or two off at regular intervals, the lack of activity makes us feel worse, then we're weaker, get more sore, etc, so we don't take time off. BUT, we do take a workout off when we need, we skip a particular body part for a week or two when we need, we lessen the load and periodize when we need, we just don't take off a scheduled amount of time.

Topic: Facebook Dan, that did make me laugh hard - ha!!
With camp over the weekend and getting ready for it, I haven't been getting to it yet at all, so getting the email notices have been good. Eventually I need to learn the thing, but it is fun to have a place that is purely social and my wife showed me how to do the searching like people from high school, etc.

Topic: Muscle Gain? You don't. That's what keeps us training for more. One day you will - you'll hit an age when you see you're starting to decline in actual size, etc, but we're talking 50+ years old. Then, it's a slow decline and since your peers are dying off, 75 lbs overweight, and look 30 years older than you, you find out that living a healthy, active life was worth it. You may not be comparing yourself next to people in posing trunks in front of judges, but if you must compare....you'll find great pleasure being so far ahead of where you could be....look today at Frank Zane, Dave Draper, Alan Earl....even Clint Eastwood (just saw his commericial) these are guys in their 60's. And there are even guys like that still competing - Reed Masters.

Thanks again for all who came - just can't say enough about how great this experience is....you guys come to experience what may become a highlight of your career with some of the legends of the sport and it's the staff that walk away equally as inspired. Thanks to the staff who made it possible as well - Goodin, Whitacre, Kornblum, Propst, and McCauley. And thanks to Bronco for being such a huge help as a staffer and participant both.

Topic: Facebook So, the cool thing is my graphic designer said he did it and 5 friends from HS and college found him, it was great, he loves it for the business contacts....so I thought you fill out a bio thing and it connects people - I didn't realize people get on there every 5 seconds and tell you what they're doing. There has to be some good function for it? Remember, I'm the most impatient guy on the planet when it comes to learning something new - I had to be talked out of taking my new phone back every 10 minutes for a week until I learned it.
That's me on the phone and computer at home with Ashlyn working on my hair. The K's don't miss a chance to play...even when we're working we're having fun....Lynnea was painting my toe nails. |

Topic: Facebook So against my better judgement I signed up for a facebook account today. Within 3 minutes I had over 100 email, about 300 and counting now - from people I don't even know....IFBB pros, weirdos, and I think even a Nobel Prize winner. I thought this was a grown-up version of myspace - and it may be....but how in the heck do you have time to do anything with it? Someone help before I double dose on my valium!!!!

Topic: Team K MVPs '08 So far, the top three candidates in each category are (in no particular order):
MVP: Kori Propst - two pro cards and a pro Mid-America figure title. Since the pro cards were as a client and non-staffer, I'll let her stay in the game. Homer Alafa - five contests, five overall wins, two pro cards. Brad Steere - pro card, light-weight International title.
Most Improved: Mark Irwin - lost over 100 lbs in '08, competed in first show. Craig Valier - lost over 60 lbs, competed in first show, and nabbed second place in his masters class. Deb Day - Went from WNBF obscurity to two top-three heavy-weight wins with first place votes.
Most Supportive: Graig Presti Patti Clutter Jordan Chabinsky Mary Ford (included four here due to a tie....but I could have put two dozen - so many people are so helpful not only on the forum but at shows - amazing actually.)
So, there are the finalists; now email your final votes and we'll announce winners!! |

Topic: NB&F These and many more suggestions have been made to Steve. In the last two years I've seen him listen and respond to the following: 1) more features on top WNBF pros 2) more actual training articles 3) more news to get more personality building of the top "stars" 4) more science review information ...and much more. The mag is way better - but can and needs to keep moving forward.
I like the comparison shots from the stage, but that takes a dedicated photographer. Keep making suggestions to Steve.

Topic: Off-Season Body Dysmorphia! First, let me admit I didn't read every post here - just saw the topic and skimmed a couple. Two thoughts: 1) Some people don't mind being "big." I didn't used to....14-16%....I just loved lifting more weight and looking huge in a shirt (I just must have avoided mirrors or thought it was a necessary off-season evil.) Some just truly feel better bigger and stronger - maybe an insecurity thing. 2) If you don't like option #1 - live a healthy life and don't make it all about how you look. I want to see my abs, I want to fit in my 28" jeans, I want to feel lighter when I run, I love feeling lean and tight....but then I don't look as big - it's a trade. Whichever you like - embrace it and love life. If you constantly hate yourself for how you look - you're in the game for the wrong reason. |

Topic: Eating non-essential Appendages: What gets YOU through that 3rd hour??? 1) water 2) green tea with minimal stevia 3) enjoy the suffering knowing that the contest is won one meal cycle at a time; not on contest day. You can talk yourself into feeling good about going to bed hungry or feeling hungry in general - that's when you're making progress....given, of course, you're blood sugar is not in peril and you know the difference. |

Topic: Training When Traveling I used to find a gym regardless. In my 20's, travel revolved around training. Now I squeeze in what I need to and don't train when traveling unless it's a planned fun one with a friend/client.

Yes, you make the most gross weight/muscle gain early. Fact. You then refine by seeing better training and just more time continue to bring up more improvements here and there. You still want to train heavy and basic to keep muscle - your body will constantly look to drop what it doesn't need, but this is why as a bodybuilder you look your best into your 40's if you keep relatively injury free and consistent. And even if you can't gain 5 lbs a year - why would you want to not train and be healthy and strong? I look forward to being over 60 like my friends Reed Masters and Alan Earl and look like superstuds....those are the guys who are my heros! |

Topic: Muscle Gain? Correct. I had a thread if you can find it, that showed pics of me 20 years ago on stage and now on stage - at the same weight - but I look 20 lbs bigger now. You WILL gain weight as you gain muscle, but once you reach your genetic max....95% or so within 6 months of training, it's down to refinement. An elephant is an elephant, a mouse is a mouse, a kanagroo is a kangaroo.....your muscle building capacity is in your DNA. Your effort in the gym - both physically and intellectually, will get you to your max...but your max is your max.

Topic: Thank You, TEAM K, for 2008! Some very heartfelt thanks to such a wonderful group of people I get to pretend I work with. So many comment that our forum and clients are the smartest, most fun, best in the country - how can I disagree? The proof is right here on the board. Your dedication, your work ethic, your humor, your humanity, your support for one another - I'm so humbled and grateful to you all.
2008 saw the continued integration of Sean McCauley as our Program Director, Kori Propst as our Wellness Director, Tony Bronco as our Business Manager, Mary Ford as our Posing Program Director, and Nancy Kornblum as our East Coast Contest-Prep Director - we made the decision to add layer upon layer of support for our clients and our staff just can't be matched. Many client-prep coaches out there have no education and little experience in the physical and nutritional sciences and our staff collectively has 4 bachelors degress in physical sciences and health, 3 masters degrees in health and counseling, and two doctorates in nutrition and health (not to mention a couple degrees in business). Combine that with five WNBF pro cards and a few decades of experience and you have me bragging my butt off about how superior my staff is - I couldn't be prouder of a group of people to surround myself with.
We moved our local operations into a fantastic 3,500 square feet headquarters and are in the process of adding 1,000 in 2009. We promoted our first show in 5 years and brought it back with 95 competitors including 40 top pros in what was described by others as the best-run, best-overall show they had ever competed in. Thanks again to the clients and staff that made that possible. We started free client prep camps twice a year and are moving one to the east coast in April.
So much more I could tell you about that we have planned this year. For now, I can only say 2008 saw our greatest year in number of pro cards and pro titles won and many best-evers for many more. It's not about winning all the time - this is a journey and it's about moving forward and having a lot of fun along the way. I hope we can help with both.
With all the gratitude I can muster, my warmest thanks to all our clients and staff for a great year. Have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season and let's make 2009 even better! My best to you all - Joe

Topic: Muscle Gain? Muscle Gain - without drugs, you'll gain 95% of the weight and muscle that you ever will within 6 months of hard training. Look at the best competitors in the world - like Dave Goodin - and his contest weight hasn't gone up 5 lbs in the last 15 years....his best contest weights have been lower....he won the overall worlds at 158 and competes in the 160's. What happens over time is you get denser, rounder looking muscle, you improve weaker areas due to training time or improvements, and all those small changes make you appear much bigger. It's worth the decades of training, but forget about the scale.
