Topic: Chains and Bands

ok Mary.  Here is an avatar of me instead of my son Owen.  Sorry, no action lifting shots.  I'll have to work on that.

Mary,
I am in Evansville.  I met you at The Zone last time you were in town working out with Dr. Joe.

Topic: Chains and Bands

Bands and chains are an awesome addition to your training cycle.  Don't overdo the chains.  The only time I have ever had any discomfort in my shoulders with my bench press training was after about 8 weeks using the chains.  Also, make sure that there is still part of the chain on the ground when you reach full extension with your arms (you may already know this stuff).   I especially enjoyed using the bands for box squats.  Overall, a great addition in my opinion!

Jason B,

Where is the competition on Aug. 4th?  Good luck!  Also some very impressive efforts in the strongman competition.  There are definitely some benefits for bodybuilders to include some strongman/powerlifting training in their routines.  Also I always find it nice to have new, unusual challenges to add to a training routine.

Well, after the pizza, brownies, and potato chips this weekend, I may be deciding between the 198 class and the 220's.  After the warmup week last week, today begins week 1 in preparation for a potential January meet.  Bench press emphasis today, Heavy Deadlifts Wednesday, Speed Box Squats Friday.  Next week will be speed work for the deadlifts and heavy on the squats.  I will keep you posted on the progress.

I'll try to get a picture to use.  I will do some research and see if I can find some of the top totals for the different weight classes.  Nothing wrong with Advil.  Whatever gets you through the workout.  This week is a "welcome back" week and then I will start structuring my training cycle.   I will keep you posted.  As I get closer I will definitely be getting your input on nutrition as I make my final decision on a weight class (181 or 198 depending on where my body goes).

Ok, I give up.  Now that you have created this new area to post I guess I am going to have to stop lurking and start contributing.  We finally have our squat rack, platform, and bench press in the studio, so this is Week 1 getting back to the big lifts.  I am hoping to do a Raw (belt only) meet sometime in early 2008.  If anyone else is interested, let me know.

Topic: "Normal People" post here

Wow.  Apparently I need to keep up to speed on some of these posts.  I need to make sure I schedule my workout with Mr. Gunshow next week so I can make sure he is working hard enough.  If he has trouble typing his posts next week, you will know why........

Ashlyn,

That is some great advice from RippedChick as far as doing the rotations.  If you are uncertain about using the bands or cables, use either the green or yellow medicine ball at the Zone and do the same rotations (low to high, then high to low).  As you get more comfortable with the movement, then try the bands.  If I am in the gym next time you are there, just ask me and I will show you what she is talking about.

Topic: I just bought myself...

Sean,

You will love using that belt and it will last forever.  I have had mine for 13 years and it is still as solid as when it was new.

Trey,

Keep working hard bud.  Make sure you are working on your squat technique with the PVC pipe, doing your pushups and chinups, and working on your coordination with things like jump rope.  Next time you are working out when I am in the gym talk to me and I will give you a couple of more exercises to mix in.

Topic: Teens

I have had the opportunity to work with several young athletes.  The key at age 14 is to focus on perfect technique on every single rep.  Make sure he is doing the big lifts (squat, bench press, deadlift, and if he has someone comfortable with the technique to teach him, powercleans).  We have our younger athletes start off squating and power cleaning a 4ft piece of PVC pipe until their technique is perfect.  Then they move up to ultralight or alumalite bars (15lb or 30lb) until they are ready to move on to the olympic bar.  Make sure your son is doing a well rounded program.  When left to choose for themselves, most young guys will just do bench press and curls with their buddies.  Pushups, pullups, dips, and other bodyweight exercises are great for young athletes because being able to control their bodies through the movements in the gym helps them better control their bodies in competition.  Hope this helps.

Topic: Belt or No Belt?

Hi everyone.  Just another vote of support for a high quality lifting belt.  I have had mine for almost 13 years (paid $65 for it in 1994) and it is still solid.  One more key to remember when using a belt: after taking the deep breath in, press your abs out against the belt.  This will make you feel even stronger througout the lift.  Some people do it subconciously, but most don't.
