Well I am 7 weeks into the contest diet and it seems like a good time to ask the question...

So why do YOU compete?

I could type a moderate-length novel on the topic, but the short-short version would be that I am a highly motivated person who is always looking to conquer things that seem unconquerable.  I love the challenge in the gym, I love the challenge every day with the diet(on and off season) and I love knowig that I can push myself much farther than the average person. In the gym, I find a sanctuary....a place I don't have to answer to anybody. That hour or so every day is mine and I consider that time sacred. I also love the build-up to the shows. I love the increased intensity and focus. I love the hours and hours of posing practice. Come showtime, the actual contest prep is a blast too. The comradre is awesome backstage and at the shows and finally, standing on stage I have found the biggest adrenaline rush to date. I do it because I love the lifestyle, without condition.

How about you??

I love to compete in bodybuilding because there is always a new goal to achieve. I feel that bodybuilding is competing against your self. You can’t control who is going to show up. So you always have to try to improve and be the best you can be.

Ha, that is easy...I will get fat if I don't have a goal/show date. I love food way too much!

I agree with BellaBell in that I would be a fat a$$ if I did not compete.  I was there several times during my life, so I know I would be.   Dr. Joe could have used me in his last dissertation because I was a fat kid.  I got skinny and fat several times and then I found bodybuilding by accident.  Some at the gym I used to train at told me to go see Ronnie Capandano, because they felt I could compete.  I went to see him and I have been competing since.  Seanmc I am with yah with loving the lifestyle.  I actually think that I love the preparation for the show more than the show itself.  Maybe I am crazy, but I think I miss the structure once the season is over.

I am with you man...I like the contest diet part of the deal more than anything else. Sure its nice to be able to enjoy some food, but then again, I most comfortable with my appearance when I am closer to contest shape. To me, its worth the dietary sacrifices to look the way we do. I too love the structure of the diet. It makes life pretty easy in my book.

You can enjoy some treats during the off-season, like we have an off-season.  I try and make my diet as tasty as possible.  I use a lot of hot peppers in my food, keeps things interesting.  I also created a recipe for protein pudding that I eat at night and it satisfies my chocolate craving.  I also found some tasty soy chips that I am able to get in bulk at Costco.

I compete because Sean told me I had to.  I can't think of any other logical reason why I would be doing this to myself.  Fat and happy is so much easier.

Oh don't get me started! Allow me to hit the replay button on a crucial phone conversation between Wayne and myself. This took place at midnight on April 8th...the night of my first show of the season. I finished 3rd place in the class. Enjoy.

Sean: Hey man, I just got out of the finals. On my way to eat pizza. I got 3rd.

Wayne: I had you in 2nd

Sean: Thats what I thought too, but some other dude snuck in there and got it.

We then shamelessly proceeded to talk me up for a couple of minutes, appealing to the fact that I was much harder and leaner than the 2nd place dude and that as far as we could see, I didnt give up much, if any size. This is where you need to listen, as it directly applies to Waynes post:

Sean: I'll survive. I have 5 weeks until the next one (not knowing at that time I was going to Boston in 3 to compete, LOL).

Wayne: Well, if it makes you feel any better, it has to be done.

Sean: What? You compete?

Wayne: Yep. You motivated me. I have to do it.

Sean: Sweet. I am in all the way. We will start obsessing about it as soon as I get back into town.

So that is the story behind Wayne's mission to go dominate the field at the USA in Chicago. Wink

There you have it folks. Thats my story and I am sticking to it!

LOL

Okay so maybe you're right.   But you can't deny the fact that you did some arm twisting.  Besides I have to do it, you know it must be done.  Somebody has to destroy Ryan Armstrong.Wink   There I just found a new reason why I compete.

Well clearly, destruction of rivals is a perfectly viable excuse for starving ones self for, say, 32 weeks.

I compete so that real food tastes even better after 8 months of diet.

Also Sean, I'm with you 100% on why I compete, except that I absolutely ABHOR posing practice. On stage, it's all gravy...but I hate taking the time to do it at home. Unfortunately, this attitude will not win me pro status. Well, luckily I have 10 years to become as obsessive as you. What a relief!

I love the feeling of accomplishment afterwards...the challenge and discipline. I have never really been that disciplined and definitely have a hard time staing focused...but competing has helping me to better those qualities in myself; discipline, time management, strength, focus...and a whole lot of patience.

I've also learned so much about my body and how it operates which makes me fee so much more confident and in control of my body.

I know what I can and cannot get away with and how to take care of my physique.

......plus it also makes me appreciate treats so much more than when I used to eat them anytime that I wanted.
