Ok, I figure it's time to start up a new journal...  Been lurking on this board for a while, posting here & there, but decided to start a journal for accountability and to help w/motivation... A little background:

My name is Terry, I'm 38yrs old, 5'5"(on a good day), currently around 240lbs... Lifetime drug-free BB... Was a chubby, non-athletic kid, started training w/weights at 14yrs old, competed in my first BB show(NPC Teen Ohio) at 17yrs old at 143lbs.  Did my 2nd show in 2006(NPC Natural Ohio) at 165lbs after being overweight for approx 11yrs due to poor diet & non-existant cardio.  Stayed around 195-200lbs after that for a while, but the poor eating habits creeped in again and now I'm back to starting all over...LOL..

Anyway, last diet I did was low carb(avg 65grams daily)-high cardio(up to 1.5hrs daily), which worked, but since I've been reading on here and watching people's progress, I'm thinking Dr. Joe's principles might be more suitable and SUSTAINABLE over the long-term.  Even though I'm not a Dr. Joe client yet(can't afford him at this point in my life w/2 young children aged 4 & 6), I'm still going to follow a similiar program(from what I've seen) and see how it goes. Once I'm closer to contest shape again I will re-evaluate my position and most likely hire him from there. I will try to post my diet, macro's, workout & cardio daily & post progress pics as we go along.  The first ones won't be pretty, so be gentle.. Here we go... Wt in these pics was 239.2lbs...

Good LordYell  How did you survive on 65 carbs?  Joe never had me below 75 on contest prep and not very many days at that.  Wow!

Welcome and good luck on your quest!

Thanks for the well wishes!  Believe it or not, the 65grams daily never bothered me... I dieted for that show and lost about 85lbs over 15 months, but I only did THAT for about the final 16 weeks..I guess I was lucky that my energy never really dropped and I didn't get weaker until the very end..  Not sure if you are familiar w/Dave Palumbo, but the diet was similiar to his... 65grams daily, with one cheat meal(mine was a cheat DAY-LOL) each week.  It was all the cardio that wore me out!  haha  I'm interested to see how a higher carb.....(my starting macros are going to be about 250p, 200c, and 40F)....and lower cardio...(starting at 3-steady days at 30min and 2-HIIT days at 20min).... will work out for me...

Miki, yep, 65g....  Cracks me up when I read everyone's journals and the lowest I see even w/women who are tiny is 125g... Guess we'll see how my body responds w/higher carbs & less fat... My fat when on that low of carbs was around 85g daily, now it will be around 40g..

Summerset, hello again...Thanks for checking on me.. I'll see if I can keep this journal updated somewhat regularly..

Angela, Nice to see you again.. Thanks for coming out of hiding! LOL... Yep, I'll keep an eye on ya!  Glad you checked in...

Ok, yesterday started with am cardio.... 30min at 3.5mph on the treadmill/no incline

No workout-Rest day

Only had 3 meals yesterday... When I'm eating clean, it always takes me a bit to get up to 6 meals consistently b/c I'm just not hungry(may have to do w/the fact that I'm a junk food junkie and it's just not as appealing! LOL)..

Meal 1-5oz cooked chicken breast-3/4cup jasmine rice-1cup broccoli

Meal 2-same as meal 1

Meal 3-1cup 1% cottage cheese-1cup pineapple chunks-1/4cup cashews

Snack-1tbs PB

Hi Terry,

You look like you have a ton of muscle in those pics. I went on a similar diet (the Anabolic Diet) about 10 years ago and lost a ton of weight but gained it all back. I never really felt any control on the low carb diet. I was confident I would lose weight on it but when it came time to maintain I just knew deep down it wasn't the answer.

Sounds like you and I are in agreement there.

The good news is with Joe's plan (or his books are great if hiring is not financially in your future) is that you have so much more control. The macros you want to work up to (250/200/40) are coincidently exactly what I followed for the last 44 weeks. The only thing that changed was the carb increase day when I went up to 350. Joe added another smaller one(250-300g) 10 weeks in to slow the loss down. You could do an increase once a week and evaluate from there.

This site is awesome with such great support.

How much fat were you eating on Palumbo's diet? I was having a couple of hundered a day on the Anabolic (almost 5 days worth of fat for me now). I feel so much more sane now.

Good luck man. You'll be back before you know it!

Mark,

On Palumbo's plan, my macro's were typically 275p, 50-60c, and 75-85F... Cardio started at 60min steady state 6xper week and ended up at 90min(one 60min session/one 30min session) 6x per week.  It actually worked pretty well and I typically was never hungry..  It was just A LOT of cardio to be doing, that's all... Also, being natural, I figured Dr. Joe should be more experienced dealing w/drug-free competitors than Dave would be, not to take anything away from him b/c obviously HIS methods work, too..

As for my macros now, I actually based them on yours, LOL... We have different body types, but they seemed fitting based on all of Dr. Joe's articles I've read on this site. How much cardio did you end up doing at the most while coming down?

Hi Terry,

In regards to cardio, I did it about 4-5 times a week for the first 7 months and was losing at a good rate (lost about 65 pounds). 2 of those were 20 min HIIT and the other 3 were 40 min moderate.

At the begining of July Joe and I decided we had to step it up becuase my deadline was close so I ended up doing 40 min mod cardio everyday and 20 min HIIT on my non weight workout days. (It came out to an average 11 times a week). Lost 55 pounds doing this in the last 4 months or so.

I wouldn't reccomend the double cardios unless your back was up against the wall.

Welcome Terry!  I thnk you are going to love it here and it looks like you are off to a great start.  Amazing - 65C!  I wonder if this is a 'guy' thing?  I have to have my carbs.  LOL!  Protein is my least favorite macro and even when I binge I have never eaten as much protein as you eat!  I was attracted to Dr. Joe for the same reasons.  At 48, I want to be healthy and strong :)  So I think you are in the right place.  Glad you decided to start a journal.  I haven't really written in any of the guys journals but I promise to visit often!  Have a great day!

Mark,

Thanks for the info... Obviously everything went well with you, and even with the amount of weight you lost, that cardio wasn't TOO bad.  Again, GREAT job!!

Pam,

Thank you for the welcome!  I read some of your journal entries and I'm glad to see you were able to put things in perspective and are ready to push on to even GREATER heights!  You've come a LONG way from what I read, and your avatar looks GREAT!  The support system seems wonderful here, and that helps alot.. Keep checking back!

Well, I emailed Dr. Joe and we decided in my case it would be best to wait to work with him until I pick a specific contest and then we can plan things out from there.  From my last contest in 2006, I learned that although I can GET lean, I need to STAY that way for a while in order for my loose skin to tighten the way it needs to in order to look my best.. Obviously, I failed to do that this time,so, for the moment, my initial goal is going to be to get under 200lbs... Once I get there or below, my body starts taking on a whole new look, so at that point I will re-evaluate if I will do a show Summer 2009 or just stay fairly lean throughout the summer and do a Fall show.  For the first phase of my plan, in order to get to 200lbs, I'm going to go with what I already know works fairly well for me and do a low-carb diet.  I'll start posting daily diet, cardio, and workouts on Sunday so you can see what I'm doing and how it's working. Thanks for following along!  Should be interesting..
