Hi,
I compete riding dressage. Can you recommend nutrition tips for the day before and the day of my competitions which are often in intense heat and sun? Thanks,
Melissa

Hi Melissa! Because you're riding in intense heat, obviously staying hydrated is going to be very important. If you had to rate the intensity of riding on your body on a scale of 1-10 (10 being highly strenuous and tiring), what would you rate it?

Hello Kori and Dr. Joe,

>>>If you had to rate the intensity of riding on your body on a scale of 1-10 (10 being highly strenuous and tiring), what would you rate it?

I would rate the day of a show a 7. The warm up in the heat is rigorous to get my horse soft and supple. I have to wear a black coat, breaches, gloves, and a riding helmet. If the sun isn't blaring, I would it a 5-6.

I do understand the "macros concept" and the importance of the right amount of carbs, proteins, and fats from Kori's teaching. I tend to be a bit heavy on the carbs sometimes and lower on the protein.

The biggest thing would be hydration as Kori said, but secondly you need energy without feeling full or heavy.  I'd eat in a stable way and maybe just a little lighter the day before and then just what you need to have good energy - and then use liquid carbs like Gatorade to make sure you have enough carbs for the event.  Similar to what I recommend for athletes like swimmers who have to be ready for several heats in the same day - can't over do it, but you have to stay stable with what's in the blood stream, what's going in the blood stream, and being just filled up enough to have some stored carbs to draw from without being full and heavy feeling.
