I searched back through the Forum for information on drinking coffee and came away confused (imagine that ). I read some early posts that made it sound like drinking coffee (black...no additives) was OK, but then other posts that suggested it was bad. What is the real deal here? Should I be drinking it 8 weeks out or not?

Thanks Graig. I drink about 3-4 Starbuck grande's a day (black of course), but started worrying about it a little when I started reading all of the should and should not's of pre-contest. I find that it does take my mind off of eating, but more than that I just like it! I figured that because it was good and I liked it then it had to be BAD for me .

This is a true sign that I'm spending too much time on here today...does the coffee count towards my daily water intake (1.5-2 gallons) or should I actually drink more water based on the diuretic effect of coffee? Also, what about the water I use in my protein shakes and oatmeal? Too OCD??? LOL

I LOVE my coffee...but I'm not a strong enough woman to down it black. So I get a cup of Joe (ha ha, no pun intended) and I put butterscotch Rev Tech protein powder in it. YUMMY!

Craig-i would just drink you water like normal and consider the coffee a bonus. it doesn't have a huge diuretic effect, especially when you are drinking 1-2 gallons of water a day like us. welcome to the OCD club buddy!!! as for the water in protein shakes and oats..don't worry about it. consider that bonus too. as long as you are getting 1.5-2 gallons per day overall, protein shakes and oats included it's all the same and goes to the same place...your stomach...it's kind of like the dry vs wet carb deb ate :)

Craig, the water in your coffee does not count. In fact you should drink more water based on the diuretic effect as you said. Plain water should be count as water. I don't even count the water in my tea (I wish I could) and I drink lots of it. I think we are all OCD here..ha

I read a study recently (can't remember what journal it was in) detailing how athletes who hydrated with either water or an electrolyte drink like Gatorade versus a caffeinated beverage did not differ in urination amounts or levels of hydration following an athletic event. Sorry I can't recall where I read this.... I don't know how anyone can drink coffee black! I used to have coffee every morning, but only wtih at least 4 packets of sweetener! I can't stand it black, so I don't drink it at all now!

There is a study in the latest issue of the NSCA's journal this month on caffeinated pre-workout drinks. Just FYI.

I can do without a lot of things, but not coffee....black. I do cut it about 2-3 days prior to contest, but if Joe doesn't require that, I won't. It makes me very cranky to have to drink hot water or hot tea. Gotta have my coffee.

I'm with you all here. Gotta have my coffee. Drinking a tall cup of it right now. I like my straight up black. Started drinking coffee with my Dad when I was in the third grade. Of course, he put a little cream and sugar in it. It was a sneaky ritual between the two of us that nobody else could find out about. Believe it or not, I wasn't allowed any junk or sugar when I lived at home. My Mother's rule, not my Dad's. I tend to drink coffee as a appetite suppressent sometimes too. I also use it as a boost about an hour before training.

I have to agree with Kori - if I read her right - in that the liquid you drink is counted. At least in Joe World. The diuretic effect can't counteract all the water in the drink; no way. But the real OCD issue going on is the fact that someone in the normal throes of dieting would worry about getting exactly one gallon or one and a half, etc. Water is for your benefit - stay hydrated for injury prevention, for mild appetite suppression...but outside of peak week, there's no need to be exact.

Yep! was talking about hidration. I noticed after having lots of tea or when I was drinking coffee, if I don't get enough water, my skin will tell me righ away. I don't have enough knowledge regarding peak week to comment about it..
