Hi everyone.  Thought some one might have an answer to this question.  I am currently on a 225/200/40 plan and about three weeks ago I switched around some of my carb sources and feel much softer.  I had been drinking a fair amount of fat free milk and also eating apples and then switched those two items out for more oatmeal and wheat bread.  My question is does the type of carbs affect my body fat loss (not including bad carbs like sugars, etc)?  I am not very clear on the GI so am not sure if the trade off I made effected that some how or if this is more of a mental game I am plying with myself.  My body weight has stayed around 142 for the past 3 weeks (still 18 weeks out).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey Brent. Each of us will respond a little differently to various carb sources. If your carb sources are natural (what does your wheat bread contain?), that's your best bet. But I'd listen to your body. If you feel better on the other carbs you were eating, and you were still losing body fat, then I wouldn't mess with what's working. The other thing to consider is how  many carbs you're eating within each meal AND what the timing of those carbs are.

Thanks for the help Kori.  Is there a certain ingredient I should look for my wheat bread to have? Is there a certain brand/type of bread you recommend?

With respect to the amount and timing of the carbs, what I have heard is that you don't want to have carbs after a certain point in the evening.  I currently spread my meals out over seven meals as I getting hungry quickly.  My last meal is at 9:30 and the one before that is at 7:00.  I do not have any carbs at my last meal and spread my 200 daily carbs evenly over the other 6 meals.  Is that correct?  Thanks!

I just try to avoid high high carbs late at night...i think it depends on everyone, but it makes sense not to eat alot of energy packed carbs when you are gettin ready for rest. So slowly filter them off by the end of the night

Thanks Lucas.  I actually felt bad for you the other day.  Sean and Joe were laying it on pretty thick but you fought back well.

Brent, I eat Ezekiel bread/english muffins. It's flourless and made with WHOLE sprouted grains. It's in the freezer section. You keep it in the frig. Most regular brand breads have a lot of preservatives in them.

As for timing, I refrain from eating anything but fibrous carbs (vegetables) with my final meal before bed. I have the most carbs in the two meals that surround my weight workout and no carbs in the meal immediately following cardio.

Lucas, I hate to say it but I think I might fall into that "middle age" class but hopefully on the younger end.

Kori, thanks so much for the input on the carbs.  It is very helpful.  I am going to go to the store tomorrow and see if I can find some of that Ezekiel bread.

Kori - Why no carbs in the meal immediately following cardio? Will eating carbs right after cardio slow down or stop the fat burning process? What does your post cardio meal consist of?

I have my complex carbs at breakfast, pre and post and on days when I only do cardio I still have my weight training post workout meal that is high in carbs. If this is wrong then on only cardio days I will have most of my carbs in the morning and then pre cardio.

what and when has so much to do with your own body. A guy who eats 600g a day is going to be different than a girl who eats 100g a day, ect.

Ok, then Sean, what about me?  I eat 100g/day.  I evenly space them throughout the day with only fibrous carbs at meal 5, and no carbs at meal 6 (prebed).  I prefer to do fasted cardio, m1, lift, m2, etc.  Do I need to have a shake only after cardio, then lift, then double up on carbs?  Maybe it doesn't even matter until I get below 10-12% bodyfat?  Give me your opinion because now I'm thinking I've been doing something wrong for like 10 years!

I didn't mean to cause a bunch of confusion. For a guy who is consuming 600g of carbs, it's going to be difficult to fit them all in if you have NO carbs post cardio.

I have a high carb meal pre and post weights. I wait an hour and a half after I eat to do cardio, then I have just protein following cardio. As I understand it, your body turns to the circulating blood glucose (if you eat carbs after cardio), instead of preferentially burning fat. After having protein (like 1/2 a scoop of whey) after cardio, then I wait another 1.5-2 hours before I have a real meal.

Summer, are you doing cardio and weights back to back?

I think I'm going to start posting my Science or Fiction articles on a separate thread - could answer a lot of questions.  Menna, cardio is catabolic - that's why it's effective at burning body fat.  Post-cardio protein stops cortisol and catabolism but allows fat burning to continue almost unabated.  Carbs post-cardio and fat burning is over before the first gram reaches your cardiac sphincter.

So I should.....

  1. Eat - pro/carb
  2. Lift (drink my Xpand with BCAA's)
  3. Cardio
  4. whey protein only immediately after
  5. 1-2 hrs later, eat a meal

I didn't realize I shouldn't have carb with post cardio food.  I've been slowing down my fat burning.  Dang!

after cardio, i'll have some whey which has about 1-3g carbs...is even this small amount going to end bf reduction?  i have had no problem loosing weight, but would this make cardio less efficient?
