Havent been training with a belt lately. Feel like my core is getting stronger. This includes squats and deads. i feel that the belt gives a false sense of security to some, and stunts development of strength and stability in the lower back and abs. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I only where a belt when I'm lifting heavy weight. I really dont want to have any back injuries so I use one when Im doing heavy Deads and Squats. I also use one when I do Push Presses just because I feel more comfortable that way. I dont think you need one if your doing 8 or more reps.......unless your back is bothering you. Thats just what I do.

There was a huge thread on this topic...we need to dig it up. We got into all the specifics of belts and the advantages they provide.

It was a great thread. Basically we determined that Sean's tapered belt is for wussies. Way to go Sean!

You are on thin ice Daniel. Its fine for people who are not going super heavy. But since I have decided to be reckless once I am healed up, I went ahead and ordered the non-tapered version. HAHAHA! It will supposedly ship out to me as soon as they kill a cow, cure the leather and mine the ore. I got a black one too...which they supposedly had in stock.

Gotta use a belt for heavy work. Don't use it for light or moderate work, never use it unless your core is in jeopardy, but never squat, deadlift, or do heavy unsupported rows without one. The front of the belt supports your trunk, the pressure of the belt gives spinal stability, and without one you not only risk injury you'll never lift as much. Squatting and deadlifting are actually the only times I use one and then usually not until I get over 315, but as soon as I clasp the Inzer lever, I can get 50 more lbs with the same effort.

I have NEVER used a belt before, but after reading Joe's post, maybe I should invest in one. Too bad Sean got rid of his old pink tapered one!

Thanks for the input guys. I have always wore one in the past. Especially when lifting heavy. Just something i have tried recently. Trying to strengthen my core a bit. Thanks for the specifics Joe. Will wear one when i do heavy squats, deads and bent rows. 3 of my absolute favorite exercises.
