Started last month- During cardio (walking, running, eliptical, stairs, etc.) my toes go numb (feels like 1000's of needle pricks). Only happens on the right foot. It doesn't end there, they stay numb for days & travels to my ball/arch. My shoes feel fine; I even got new ones. If I don't do cardio for a week or so, the problem goes away. I don't want to go to a doc that wants to dissect my foot, so anyone have a suggestion?

I've noticed the same problem when I'm on the eliptical. It's mostly my right foot, (big toe & ball) but if I stay on longer than 20min, my left starts getting numb as well. But the numbness goes away shortly after I finish. I just assumed it was because I'm not used to doing it or my shoes are too old, so I'd be interested to hear suggestions too.

Kim start w/simple solutions 1. proper fitting shoes 2. proper stretching--before/after workouts, throughout the day 3. the "perform better" foam roller-----I used to get bad knee pain . turns out it was really tight quads (with adhesions) and pain was radiating down to my knee......started getting deep tissue massage and using the foam roller. Kim, I want to understand this totally correctly. After/during one cardio session, your right foot at the ball/arch goes numb and stays that way for days? Even if you no longer commence cardio sessions. I can just guess around here...and I'm sure others will chime in. This used to happen to me: The very first thing I would do is answer some easy questions and then move to the more difficult route. I'm sure Joe would have some good thoughts on this too. I know you said your shoes feel fine. Are you positive you're in the proper fitting shoe? Is your right foot slightly bigger than your left? Are the shoe laces strapped too tighly before the shoe is properly broken in..especially at the top of the shoe towards the toes? Can you loosen up the laces dramatically while you're braking in the shoe and see if this makes a difference? Can you get a separate in-sole? From there I would move to a quality orthodic. but what seems to give the situation away here is that it happens during/after cardio. During cardio, your foot heats up and swells, gets bigger and needs more room. It will feel numb if it is constricted. My only hunch as to why you are feeling this in your right over your left, is that perhaps your right foot is slightly bigger than your left. The other part of the equation that has me guessing is that this discomfort lasts for days after the one session. New shoes especially will constrict before they are properly broken in. It could be that you're in a whole size too small. I take an 11 sneaker. This happened to me when I was in a 10 sneaker. I always thought I was a 10 sneaker because I'm a 10 dress shoe. I'm actually a size up in sneakers. Many females size up in sneakers and have no idea of this. Just thoughts Kim. I'll be curious as to what you end up discovering and I hope you find the answers quickly.

Kim, The same thing happens to me on cardio...if I go for about 45 minutes on the elliptical, my toes would go numb. I echo Mary's comments...make sure your shoes fit you and are not worn out. I invested in new sneakers and also inserts and that made a huge difference for me.

This happens to me - I lace my shoes pretty tight and if I'm doing the eliptical I have to make sure they aren't cranked so tight. Also, when I do the eliptical it happens to me my solution is to not keep my feet in the same spot of the paddles - I move them around change my angles so I can drill in on different parts of my legs and I never let my foot plant and stay in place - I let the heal life and reposition it almost every stride.

Kimberly & Jane If you need good shoes go to Swifts on Weinbach (North of Lloyd in the East side business complex). It's a pretty new place. The young man (Graham) that owns the store really knows his stuff and he even has some equipment there that will show you how much pressure you have on your feet and also where you toe off. I'm a biggie on having proper shoes. He watched me walk, run and then tested my foot pressure and toe off and then measured my feet. Then he brought out "one" pair of shoes and they were perfect. Prices are real reasonable and he has discounts. It use to take me forever to break in a pair of shoes and with this pair I went straight to the elliptical machine and had no numbing what so ever. Wahoo!

Great ideas! I thought since my sneakers are comfortable that they fit, but I never thought of the swelling factor. Yes, I lace my shoes pretty tight, so I'll loosen. I'll also get my feet sized to see if my right is larger than my left. Then, check out some insoles. The last time I did cardio was boxing Sat. (just moving around the ring, in/outs hitting mits) & today, Tues, my toes still feel like needles are pricking them. Starts with the toes then moves up into the ball/arch. Kim, I was on the elliptical today thinking of the numb toe thing. The other thing I do is similar to Lucky Dog...I continually reposition my feet on the paddles. I also concentrate on putting more of my weight on my heels (therefore not letting them come up). Good luck!

Funda/Dog- I may look like I'm doing the hoe-down, but I'll have my feet all over those paddles if it means no prickly feet

Use a PreCor elliptical. That is the only machine on the market that has a solid biomechanical design. When you use some other form of elliptical, you are up on your toes and your heel is not on a pedal. That will make your fooot go number every single time. On a PreCor, you are well balanced and working through a nice range of motion.

Pattie- I went to Swifts & bought a pair of Mizuno shoes & 2 pairs of really comfy socks. They feel great & the price was reasonable. They spent so much time watching me walk & using a computer to guage my foot pressure. They even taught me a new way to tie my laces (who would have thought??). I'll definitely go back. Thanks! Update...Still can't feel my toes & haven't done cardio in 2 WEEKS!! AND I DIDN'T EVEN DO LEGS THIS WEEK. I thought the inflamation might need time to go down?? If things don't change by early next week- podiatrist, here I come. I'll keep ya posted! It's amazing how the diet kind of flops when I don't stay focused on my workouts. That's how it is for me at least. I've fallen off the wagon, & I gotta get my focus back before 2 lbs turns into the 60 lbs I lost last year!!

Kimberly - glad Graham at Swifts worked out for you. They have some wonderful insoles too. Sean - I second the motion on the PreCor elliptical machines. It is the only elliptical machine that doesn't make my feet go numb and is easy on my knees. I've tried many brands during the years and an amen to PreCor.
