Would you use knee wraps for heavy squats to prevent injury?

Knee wraps don't necessarily prevent injury - they'll help you use so much more weight that you may cause injury. A powerlifter friend of mine once told me if I get used to training in them and know how to use them I could add 100 lbs to my squat. I never have, but it kind of sounds fun! Dave Goodin brought up a great point at our last Fantasy Camp when someone asked this question: the patella-femoral joint is already so incredibly stressed/compressed with any heavy leg movement but then when you crush the patella into the open condyles with the force of the wrap you're just asking to cause problems. Very logical/good point. Maybe there's a happy middle ground where you do add support without joint trauma, but I've just never gotten into using them.

Wow!!.........great info Dr. Joe i had know Idea about that............ive never used them because my ego is much more pleased by seeing results in my physique compared to lifting like a powerlifter......and i dont care to have something wrapped around my knees......but your advice is much more convincing.

ok, now I am concerned. I have chondromalatia patella, meaning my patella isn't lined up properly. If I don't wear I knee wrap to keep it in line, I see stars. I have much less pain when I wear it. Am I doing more damage by wearing it after all?

We're talking about powerlifter compressive knee wraps - not a neoprene patellar tracking brace. You're safe. But more than likely you need some isolated, unilateral glute strengthening to keep your femur stable in gait and possibly custom orthotics to prevent lower leg internal rotation. Wearing a brace forever isn't fixing the problem.
