Dr. Joe Klemczewski

I am going to devote a column in every issue to journey through my nutrition manual, Metabolic Transformation. I believe this will be the most powerful way for you as a reader to fully understand the information provided. I will make commentary on and explain in greater detail each chapter of the manual as we progress through each issue of Revolution.

For those of you yet without a copy, here's the entire introduction:

INTRODUCTION Entire sections of book stores are dedicated to diet books yet we still struggle with our weight. New “experts” emerge almost daily with another best seller that contains the secret you've been missing. Despite providing a necessary role in our culture, weight management is an industry with a couple skeletons rattling in it's closet. One fallacy is that if a book is successful, the diet must work. The truth is, most books are successful because those of us who fail on one diet rush to buy the next “guru's” plan. Contextual credibility of the author is hard to determine because anyone can make themselves sound like a scientist. For example, some authors work exclusively with high-level athletes, drug-using bodybuilders, or any narrow population and then expect their experience to carry over to you and me. Another trap people fall into is thinking that we are discovering revolutionary new ways of eating with previously undiscovered weight loss technology. Science, though perhaps not complete, is sound and without true controversy in regards to metabolic physiology. Every new diet is a literal repackaging of an old idea with a great new marketing plan.

Hopefully you're now thinking that if there is no new information and people are getting fatter despite exponential increases in experts, books, and diets, why did I write this book?! In my experience with individual nutritional consulting, I don't run across too many diet novices. My average client has read books, been on diets, yet still struggles. The common thread over the years has been a fundamental lack of understanding. Authors are pressured to make their diet easy. They fill books with recipes, daily menu plans, and detail pathways of following their diet to the letter. The reader learns how to follow that diet, but they don't learn how to eat. They don't learn how to maintain their weight. In short, they don't learn what it takes to function in a society with little spare time, fast food, and temptation galore!! My clients succeed when they learn how to become their own nutritionists which is my goal for them. This is also my goal for you.

Nutrition isn't just about science, it also takes practicality. You can be holding the perfect diet, and yet fail at managing nutrition in the real world. I studied nutrition formally for years, I stay current with research, I read journals and new text books constantly but knowledge is only part of what has given my clients success. I have learned more about weight loss because I must diet to a ridiculously low level of bodyfat for professional contests. I, by the way, am the world's worst dieter. I am genetically stuck with a high “metabolic set point” for bodyfat storage and I don't have the greatest level of discipline when it comes to food - I love to eat!!! My own dieting and weight management has given me practical experience that often leads to insight and the development of new “tricks” for easier “survival” while losing body fat. I also have learned immensely from every client who brings unique circumstances to the same battle.

This book will give you the necessary, but concise, physiological information you need to become your own nutritionist. It also, however, will be peppered with tips, ideas, and strategies that will help you win the war for control.

There you have it. I simply have one goal. I want you to understand nutrition more fully as you start progressing in your permanent weight loss. This column and your journey through Metabolic Transformation will be on-the-job training. You'll gain the knowledge slowly as you need it while you're getting results. Next month we'll jump right into chapter one, Metabolism: Turning Your Body Into a Fat-Burning Machine. If you don't have a copy, I have made them available for half price to our subscribers. Check out the Revolution Superstore. It's not yet complete, but it links you directly to Genetitec where you can purchase with your discount. I look forward to getting started next month! I can't wait to hear about the changes in your life!!
